Federico García Lorca in Granada: A Journey Through His Life and Work

Lorca in Granada: A Guide to the Places that shaped his life

Granada is once again meeting Federico García Lorca through cinema. With the recent release of movie "La bola negra", Hotel Alhambra Palace invites you to explore some of the places in the city that also feature among the film’s locations.

Join us we explore what Granada meant to Federico Garcia Lorca and how Granada became an influence on his life and work.

Granada: where Lorca’s universe began

Although Federico García Lorca was born in the nearby town of Fuente Vaqueros, Granada holds a fundamental place in his biography.

Granada was the setting for his early years as a writer, his studies and his first experiences in the artistic world. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city was experiencing a remarkable cultural flourishing, giving rise to a new generation of artists and intellectuals seeking to rediscover and reinterpret popular traditions.

It was here that Lorca found a space for his artistic interests to flourish. Music, poetry and theatre seemed to converge in a Granada increasingly alive with cultural energy and creative possibility.

Huerta de San Vicente: the poet’s summers in Granada

The Huerta de San Vicente, overlooking the Vega of Granada, was the setting for Lorca’s summers after his family acquired the estate in 1925. It became one of the most significant places in his life.

The piano, writing desk and personal belongings that once belonged to the poet are still preserved here.

It is one of those places in Granada where it is still possible to approach Lorca not as a literary figure, but as a writer in his own working space.

The Alhambra: a landscape transformed into literature

The Alhambra was a key element in Lorca’s poetic imagination. He grew up in a Granada where the Alhambra was more than a monument: it was part of the city’s memory, landscape and deeply rooted cultural identity.

As we have seen, Lorca belonged to a generation particularly interested in recovering that identity and interpreting it from a new, contemporary perspective.

Decades later, the city continues to draw on its spaces and landscapes to tell stories connected with the poet, as well as to host a wide range of cultural events.

Lorca and Manuel de Falla: when Granada brought cante jondo into the cultural sphere

The relationship between Federico García Lorca and Manuel de Falla occupies an essential place in Granada’s cultural life at the beginning of the 20th century. Alongside them, Hotel Alhambra Palace became a meeting point for the city’s artistic and intellectual life, bringing together music, culture and celebration.

The Cádiz-born composer settled in Granada in 1922 and quickly became a central figure in the city’s cultural scene. Today, the auditorium named after him stands just a short distance from Hotel Alhambra Palace. At the hotel, visitors can also discover the suite that bears his name, where original manuscripts and musical scores are still preserved as part of its decoration.

A friendship grew between Federico García Lorca and Manuel de Falla that went beyond their shared talent and passion for art and culture. Cante jondo, the profound Andalusian singing tradition, played a crucial role in their work and in their vision of Granada’s cultural identity. For Lorca, it represented an artistic expression charged with emotion, depth and symbolic power.

The Teatrillo at Hotel Alhambra Palace: a stage for the Granada of Lorca and Falla

In 1922, Falla and a group of artists and intellectuals organised the Concurso de Cante Jondo in Granada, an event intended to reclaim the artistic value of this deeply rooted Andalusian tradition.

It was at Hotel Alhambra Palace that Federico García Lorca recited the opening verses of his "Poema del Cante Jondo"for the first time, in our  historic Teatrillo.

This remarkable setting, together with its cultural activity, became closely connected to the artistic and social life of the city. The Teatrillo was therefore the stage for one of the most fascinating episodes of the cultural movement that was taking place in Granada at the time.

Hotel Alhambra Palace is a hotel with its own theatre, a remarkable reminder of the importance that art and culture have held — and continue to hold — within the life of the city.

Today, visitors can enter our Teatrillo and imagine that Granada of artists, musicians and intellectuals in which Lorca and Falla, among many others, played such an important role.

Lorca’s Granada returns to the big screen

In Granada’s squares, neighbourhoods, streets and familiar urban landscapes, the presence of the poet can still be felt through the city’s collective memory.

Some of these places have now returned to the big screen with the filming of La bola negra. Among the Granada locations featured in the film are Plaza de Santa Ana, Carmen de los Mártires, the Albaicín and the Huerta de San Vicente.

The film, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, takes its title from one of Lorca’s unfinished works and connects three stories set in different periods, bringing the poet’s legacy into a contemporary cinematic narrative.

The Federico García Lorca Centre: his legacy, alive in the present

There is one final essential stop for understanding the relationship between Granada and Federico García Lorca today: the Federico García Lorca Centre, located in Plaza de la Romanilla.

The centre houses the poet’s documentary archive and presents a programme dedicated to literature, the performing arts, music and other areas of contemporary culture. Its collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, drawings and other documents related to Lorca and his legacy.

The building also houses a theatre and several spaces devoted to exhibitions and cultural activities.

Lorca’s legacy is not preserved simply as heritage. It continues to inspire and generate culture.

We invite you to continue this journey at the Teatrillo at Hotel Alhambra Palace, a space that still preserves the memory of that extraordinary cultural Granada in which Lorca and Falla, among many others, were protagonists.
